Brick to Credit Card Phone
By Brian Gill
What a Godsend I could not believe the day I bought my first mobile phone. I not only got a great gray phone with a detachable aerial but a big box of batteries. I was honestly on cloud nine. No longer would I drive 25 minutes home from my last job, as I was an electrician, just to be told by my wife when I arrived home that another call had come in and believe it or not the job is in the same area I was working in. So off I would drive back to where I had come from. This new phone was going to be fantastic, I thought. So only after a very short period of time did it come to me in a flash. I was being tracked! I was not sure if I liked that. I would have to weigh it all up. The convenience of being contacted at anytime with the fact that I COULD BE CONTACTED AT ANY TIME. Don't be silly the phone had an off switch and batteries do go flat, phew I was relieved. As time went by I upgraded my phone as soon as a new one was released it seemed until today my cell phone is not much bigger than a credit card. Probably costs me the same as one as well. But having the virtually instant contact with friends and family is priceless. A little look into the future tells us that the phone will probably just continue to miniaturize until it is no longer fashionable and they will get larger and larger until I can pull my first gray phone out of the cupboard and fire it up again. Let us all pray this never happens but look around and see people wearing 'Bell bottoms' in style when I was a child. |

I do love my mobile phone, but I do remember that wonderful sense of freedom of being all alone and nobody knew where I was!
